School Description:

Welcome to the Department of Psychology, home of a dynamic group of students, faculty, and staff!  We especially welcome our current psychology students, and those of you checking out the possibilities of joining us here at the University of Prince Edward Island.

Psychology is an enormously diverse field, helping us ask big questions about the human mind, about behaviour, and about emotion. Our department is especially diverse in the approaches we take to researching these questions.  We value, use, and teach both quantitative and qualitative methods for learning about our world. We have a deeply rooted tradition in humanistic perspectives, while also embracing study in behavioural neuroscience, perception and cognition, social and developmental psychology, critical and historical perspectives, and clinical and applied psychology.

We encourage our students to fully engage in the process of liberal education. We encourage work across a broad range of elective courses in the arts and sciences, so that psychology study is enriched by a diverse context of academic disciplines and ways of experiencing, enquiring into, and making sense of our world.  Our students build skills in critical and creative thinking, effective reading, writing, and oral communication, research, and independent and collaborative problem solving.

Study in psychology, and broad liberal education, are inherently valuable and exciting.  Our programme also helps prepare students for careers, either directly following the BA or BSc degree, or after further study in a relevant professional programme, or after graduate school in psychology itself.

In addition to teaching students in a wide range of psychology courses, members of our faculty have exciting programmes of research, often engaging both UPEI students and colleagues from across Canada and the world.  Our faculty members include award winning teachers and scholars, and people committed to service in the university and the broader community.

Our department’s support staff are among the most welcoming people you will meet on any university campus.  Our student society, Psychology Arts and Sciences Society (PASS), is here to help develop rich relationships among students, and support connections between students and faculty.

Study in psychology is an exciting, rewarding, and challenging experience.  Much is required of you in effort and engagement to make the most of this experience.  We welcome the opportunity to support you in your efforts, and to explore with you the rich possibilities of psychology here at the University of Prince Edward Island.
