Undergraduate Program Description

Psychology is a science and profession that revolves around how people think, feel, behave, and experience emotions. Psychologists ask questions such as  “How do we learn?” “How do we think?” and “What motivates us?” They study how we are influenced by our environment and biological factors and the abnormalities that can occur with regard to our psychological functions.

What is Psychology?

Psychology is a science of behaviour in humans and nonhumans.  It has several subfields that examines behaviour from different perspectives – from biological to sociological, from micro (such as cellular) to maco (such as systemic) level.

Psychologists are scientists who undertake research using scientific paradigms to develop theories and test them in scientific experimentation.  They also develop new knowledge using a variety of other research methods such as interviews or focus groups.

Psychologists are also professional service providers.  Some study normal and abnormal behaviour, and assess and/or treat individuals with mental health or neuropsychological problems.  Some are consultants to communities and organizations and help out by carrying out tests of  intelligence and personality to inform decision-making.  Others study human interactions or human-machine interactions to improve the relationships.  Many others work with a variety of groups such as businesses, schools, colleges, universities, research laboratories, public health officials, lawyers, inmates, sports organizations or individuals, the military, engineers, and so on.

Psychologists contribute to every aspect of society through the generation of new knowledge and/or the application of knowledge.  Thus you will find them in diverse settings.

At Lakehead University, you will have the opportunity to study the breadth and depth of the core areas in the discipline of psychology which include the biological, cognitive-affective, individual, social, and developmental.  It will help you to understand the different aspects of the human experience and prepare you for advanced study in psychology in a subfield of your choice.

The Department of Psychology offers various undergraduate programs to suit your needs.  It also has graduate programs in psychological science at the MSc and PhD level, and graduate programs in clinical psychology at the MA and PhD level.  The PhD Clinical Psychology program is accredited by the Canadian Psychological Association.
